Friend of Palm Court Light Orchestra

A concert with the Palm Court Light Orchestra is not merely charmingly melodic and well-crafted music, exquisitely performed, with humorous segues between tunes. It is an opportunity for some of us to revel in memories of times long ago, an opportunity for new comers to be transported, as if magically, to a more genteel time. A Palm Court concert is also, for many, an afternoon’s re-connection with community, as evidenced by “the sound of happy humming all up and down the aisles.”

In successfully recreating an appetite and interest in light music, the Palm Court Light Orchestra has given life to a musical genre that was very close to being forgotten, but this has not been without its challenges. The financial cost of maintaining the orchestra is considerable. Musicians require more rehearsal time, music is copyrighted and costly to use, and in recent years there has been a fluctuation in audience numbers. As is the case for most Canadian cultural organizations, even with full houses, only about 42% of costs are covered by ticket revenue.

By donating to the Canadian Light Music Society, you are providing an opportunity for this unique orchestra to flourish. Your donation will ensure that light music, that delightful genre that continues to exist somewhere between serious symphony and the world of Pops, will indeed continue to have a stake in our theatres, and a place in our hearts and musical memories. Our 21st Anniversary marks the start of a Legacy Fund to ensure the future of the Palm Court Light Orchestra. We are requesting a special donation to help maintain this Orchestra’s excellence and future success. We will add to this fund by continuing our fundraising efforts through corporate sponsorships, grants and other fundraising activities.
